What Is Tantric Breathwork & How Does It Work?

Body Tantric breathwork is a grounded, body-based practice that uses the breath to regulate the nervous system, move energy, and reconnect you to your body. Rather than being about performance, it is a practice of awareness, learning to feel, sense, and return to what is already present within you.

At Earth Tantra, this is taught through Root to Heart Breath, a foundational practice that draws energy from the earth and gently guides it upward into the heart. Influenced by a Taoist approach, this breath begins with grounding and stability before expansion. Instead of forcing energy upward (or downward), we focus on creating safety in the body first and allowing energy to rise naturally over time.

In this way, breathwork becomes an intimate energy art of exchange. Earth Tantra also weaves tantric breath through our 4 Pillars depending on the retreat or course.

  • Self: reconnecting to sensation, truth, and the wisdom of the body

  • Nature: grounding into the earth to create steadiness and support

  • Others: exploring connection and attunement through shared breath

  • Spirit: opening into presence and awareness beyond the thinking mind

Many people are drawn to breathwork because it offers real, tangible support in everyday life either in microdosing breath (30 seconds to 3 mintues) or longer periods of breathing. As a person with adult ADHD, and as a guide, I often see many neurodiverse peoples related to this breath practice compared to others because it avoids counting, timing and is much or experiential with our own inner natural flow in the body vs the mind. Since we are moving the energy and paying attention to the sensations of this breath, it also works well for sensory avoidant and seeking people. In Tantra, we pay attention to the subtleness in energy work.

Tantric breathwork might be a good match for you if you are seeking....

  • regulating stress and calming the nervous system

  • quieting overthinking and inner criticism

  • reconnecting with the body after disconnection or life transitions

  • increasing vitality, circulation, and overall energy

  • deepening intimacy and enhancing connection with a partner

Tantric breathwork can also support more conscious sexual connection, helping shift intimacy away from performance and toward presence, sensation, and shared awareness.

While many tantric traditions include breath practices, including some more activating or kundalini-based, Earth Tantra begins with grounding. This creates a more sustainable, integrated experience, where the body feels supported rather than overwhelmed.

Ultimately, tantric breathwork is a return. A return to the body, to breath, and to a felt sense of wholeness, where presence replaces striving and connection replaces effort.
